Meet the Team

  • Meet Our Founder

    Steve Helms, founder of Helms Builders, built his career on a foundation of early passion and award-winning skill. A 1978 graduate of West Stanly High School, his woodworking and carpentry talents quickly shone. That year, Steve achieved first-place victories in both the VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) Carpentry district and North Carolina state contests, a success that culminated in a prestigious top-ten national ranking.

    Steve began his professional construction career in 1978 with George A. Little Construction Company in Albemarle. By 1983, driven by this expertise and an entrepreneurial spirit, he established Helms Builders. The company initially specialized in precision framing and detailed interior/exterior trim work. Under Steve's steadfast leadership, Helms Builders has since grown to offer comprehensive residential and commercial building services, all distinguished by the same commitment to quality craftsmanship that marked his earliest achievements.

  • Continuing the Legacy & Shaping the Future

    Jarrad developed his passion for building from an early age, literally growing up on Helms Builders jobsites throughout the Charlotte area. Working alongside his father, he gained invaluable firsthand exposure to the world of construction. After graduating from West Stanly High School in 2006, Jarrad formally joined the family business full-time, eager to immerse himself in every facet of the building process and gain a genuine "from the ground up" understanding.

    His formative years at Helms Builders were characterized by extensive hands-on involvement. Jarrad wasn't just learning; he was leading, running crews, and mastering a diverse range of critical skills—from framing and siding to intricate tile and trim-work, and even the erection of metal buildings.

    This deep, practical expertise is now central to Jarrad's pivotal role in project management. He not only ensures each build meets Helms Builders' exacting standards for quality but is also instrumental in leading the company's vision into a new era of innovation and client-focused construction.

  • The Heart of the Home & Office

    Lisa Helms, wife of founder Steve, is an essential part of the Helms Builders family, contributing her strong organizational skills, business acumen, and keen eye for detail to the company's success. After dedicating time as a stay-at-home mom, Lisa embraced her entrepreneurial spirit, successfully opening and operating her own hair salon from 2009.

    As the building industry and Helms Builders began to experience significant growth, Lisa decided it was the perfect time to bring her talents to the family business. She officially joined the team in July 2018, stepping in to manage the expanding office needs. Today, Lisa meticulously handles the company's accounting and record-keeping, ensuring smooth and efficient operations. Beyond these crucial administrative roles, she also plays a vital, client-facing part in bringing dream homes to life by personally meeting with customers and liaising with vendors for the selection of materials and finishes for new custom homes, ensuring each detail aligns with the client's vision.

    The Helms Builders family was thrilled to welcome Christiana to the team in late 2024. Christiana brings a fresh perspective, enthusiasm, and a proactive approach to her multifaceted role within the company. She works closely alongside Lisa, providing valuable support with office administration and client communication, contributing significantly to the smooth and efficient daily operations of our family business.

    In addition to these essential support functions, Christiana has taken the lead in spearheading Helms Builders' marketing efforts. She is passionately focused on sharing our story, highlighting our generations of craftsmanship, and connecting with families ready to build their custom dream homes. Christiana's energy and modern insights are a wonderful asset as we continue to serve our community and build for the future.
